Book Launch | My Port City Rotterdam: Navigating Identities in a Sea of Cultures
On 15 April 2026, we will release the book My Port City Rotterdam: Navigating Identities in a Sea of Cultures, co-authored by Yi Kwan Chan and Maurice Jansen and published by LDE Research Centre PortCityFutures. This book introduces Rotterdam through 18 walking routes — each inspired by the life story of someone who has navigated the space between arrival and belonging in the port city. Together, these stories show how diverse lives, memories, and encounters shape Rotterdam’s cultural fabric and its ever-changing relationship with the port. The book launch will take place at Het Veerhuis, a writing house located in a former ferry house that once carried RDM shipyard workers across the river every day. With the Maas as our backdrop, we will present the book and share the story behind its making. Joined by our interviewees, colleagues, and friends, we will reflect on Rotterdam’s port-city relationship and maritime cultures rooted in diversity and lived experience. The open-access book is part of the project “Views from the Outside: Towards a Resilient Port City Future in Rotterdam” — developed within PortCityFutures’ “Human-Centred Port-City Transition” research group, and supported by the Resilient Delta Initiative. This event is by invitation only. The book will be available for download from 15 April via the PortCityFutures website, with a limited number of printed copies available.
