The presentation within the theme ‘metropolitan development in ports and port cities, its history, the methodologies to assess it and their role in future design’ will focus on the city of Matosinhos and its seaport infrastructure. Matosinhos is part of what is called the “greater Oporto” and its seaport has a regional range, alongside other metropolitan/national infrastructures surrounding the city, like the airport, cargo railway, etc. The presentation will merge topics developed either in a professional environment as well as on an academic/research framework. The subjects to be discussed will be centred on how the seaport infrastructure determined the configuration of the city and what challenges it represents towards the future of Matosinhos – its urban planning and the new metropolitan correlations to be set in an integrated way. The transformation of the seaport and of the city itself is a dialogue that needs to be parentally fed in order to assure a systemic development of the municipality of Matosinhos and its region.
Prof. Omori’s research discusses the waterfront development and management after the decline of port and industrial land use. Especially in Japan, port plan and city plan are managed by different authorities. Therefore, both land use plans are not closely related, and waterfront areas are declined in some port cities. My PhD research clarifies the planning history between the port plans and the city plans from 1920’ to 1960’ in several port cities in Japan. My current work focusses on understanding how to integrate port and city plans with attention to the waterfront and land use. My approach includes research of and reference to European port revitalization projects. In my presentation I will explain the planning history of Japanese port towns and discuss the systems and methods of port regeneration, especially in regional port cities.
