Creating Changemakers - A serious game about resilience

This month’s PCF Talks Event will be somewhat different than usual. Instead of centering speakers and presentations this month’s meeting will all be about play. Serious play, however. After an introduction by Creating Changemakers’ creator Jaap de Goede and PCF Director Carola Hein we will dive into an interdisciplinary experience when dealing with disasters through building resilience and mitigation. Players will be divided in three core teams (industrial, social, cultural). These stakeholders will need to work with each other to build disaster resilience, however each team has their own economical, social, and cultural areas of focus. This approach opens room for each one of us to bring in their specific area of expertise. To round the event off we will conclude with a discussion on our experience and insights.

It will be best to attend this event in-person. However, online participation will be possible. Online participants will be given a long-distance advisory role and we will do our best to implement cameras so you can follow the happenings as closely as possible.

14:00 - 14:20

Introduction by Jaap de Goede (he/him)

Drs. Jaap de Goede, serious game designer, studied social psychology, and worked long in national television, communication and journalism, raising awareness and making complex, socially relevant subjects understandable. He sees interactive games, simulations and play as an especially effective way to communicate complex subjects and help players learn and develop systems thinking.

Playing Creating Changemakers

Creating Changemakers is being developed for TU Delft with an NWO grant, to raise awareness about multiple risks, and help to build resilience in a broad public. The idea is that the more people are aware of what might happen, and how they could deal with such situations (through cooperation, preparation and mindset), experienced in a non-threatening way, the more resilient they should become. In this session you can experience and play the game prototype for yourself – a game which is also designed to be fun, so that people will want to play it more often and learn more.

In the game you rebuild and expand a city, with a port and industry, residential areas and landmarks, while holding off all sorts of lesser disasters, and taking care of the residents. At the end of the game a really big disaster will strike – you just do not know exactly which disaster, and where and when. In the meantime you have your own goals, but you also have to make sure you weather the big disaster in the end together, and keep the people of the city alive.
