[ARIT1512] Delta, Infrastructure & Environment Design

Course description

The course is dedicated to international research project in Japan in Inbanuma Swamp on the regional water system and Vietnam Can Tho on implementation of urban green blue infrastructure. These deltaic locations are illustrative for global challenges of climate change that we consider in the context of the political ecology. The projects both aim at reparative interventions in these deltaic areas and focus in restoring the imbalance between the natural environment and the urban infrastructure. This is specifically an interdisciplinary design challenge, integrating the genius loci of the spatial assembly of the system to reach a resilience in relation to natural hazards. Resilience can only be achieved in a precise interdisciplinary design process in which students with backgrounds in spatial design and students with backgrounds in engineering collaborate intensely.

Learning objectives

Because this course is dedicated to the PhD’s working in interdisciplinary and international research projects the group will be divided over the two locations. In Japan the collaborative partner is Tsukuba University and societal partners from the Inbanuma Swamp area. In Vietnam we work within a project by PBL (environmental agency) and the University of Vietnam. The activities in the course are with both groups together aiming at discussion and vision making within the realm of political ecology, training in the collaborative interdisciplinary design process and content related activities to the projects in Japan and Vietnam. After a general program and preparation both projects will be visited in an intesive fieldtrip in hwich we organise workshops with local students to enable inclusion of the understanding what resilience from their particular cultural point of view. Each discipline will perform their own analysis, how they asses the problems and potentials in the case area, and how from a disciplinary perspective they would resolve these problems or utilize the qualities. With careful developed methodologies the processes of the different disciplines will be synchronized and synthesized into an interdisciplinary design via collective development of value system and shared goals. The group design will be worked out into the disciplinary fields on their scales (architecture a building, landscape a landscape, geo science a model of understanding, water management a circular water plan etc etc.)
