Rotterdam: from Transitpolis to City Lounge?

To kick us off, retiring professor and much involved PortCityFutures Research Lead Paul van de Laar will be presenting his valedictory lecture “Rotterdam: from Transitpolis to City Lounge?” This talk was originally given in Dutch and we are very excited to bridge the language-gap to our English-speaking PCF community.

Paul van de Laar holds a chair in cities as a portal of globalization and urban history and is head of the History department, Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. Between 2013 and 2020 he was general and artistic director of Museum Rotterdam, the city museum of Rotterdam, and developed great expertise in the heritage of diversity. His research focuses on comparative port city history and migration history. He is one of the principal investigators associated with the HERA Joint Research Programme: ‘Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe’. PLEASURESCAPES. Port Cities’ Transnational Forces of Integration (Barcelona, Gothenburg, Hamburg, and Rotterdam) (2019-2021). Together with Peter Scholten (EUR) he currently prepares a professional publication on Rotterdam superdiversity, working title: The real Rotterdammer comes from the outside.

This is the last PCF Talks event of the academic year. We invite everyone to engage in a discussion on the PCF topics that were relevant this year.
What moved us? What are the highlights of this year and what are we taking to the next?
Our gaze shall also be directed into the future. What can shape the direction of PortCityFutures in the coming academic year? What challenges do we expect and what priorities do we want to set?
This will be a great opportunity for all PCF members to bring in their thoughts and feedback in order to grow together and continuously shape PortCityFutures.
