Serious Games with PortCityFutures

17:00 - 17:10

PortCityFutures works as a network that relies on its participants in the LDE community and beyond. Such a network requires trust, loyalty and understanding. The Dilemma game developed at Erasmus University helps participants engage in ethical questions. We have played the game as a community several times since the start of PortCityFutures. It is an online game and we will engage both participants in the room and online.

Different interpretations of ethics and engagements are also the result of disciplinary practices and, since the start of PCF, we have seen, for example, differences between the ways in which anthropologists and architects/planners engage their study object. Building on the Dilemma game experience, we will discuss the challenges of connecting disciplines and linking academic research with professional practice.

Creating Changemakers Game

What if you had a tool to make citizens more aware and resilient for calamities that might happen in their lifetime? At TU Delft Faculty of Architecture, we are developing exactly such a tool in the form of the serious game Creating Changemakers, to be used in classrooms and community meetings. It is based on the idea “before the disaster is after the disaster”, meaning preparation is always relevant, as new challenges will inevitably arise, certainly in our changing world where we face political unrest and climate change.

The task of the game is to rebuild a city ravaged by a disaster and prepare for the next unknown crisis. Players take on roles, make decisions, and face unexpected calamities, learning through teamwork, discussion, and challenges. The game also includes knowledge questions, real-life challenges, and ethical dilemmas that spark discussion and deeper understanding of crisis situations.

The project combines TU Delft’s expertise in water, climate, and the history of urban development under prof. dr. Carola Hein with innovative game mechanics to foster awareness and action. Developed with students and game designer Jaap de Goede, Creating Changemakers is now entering its next phase of development and welcomes educators, communities, and testers to get involved.

Jaap de Goede designs serious games that help people grasp the deeper issues behind complex systems—especially in finance, sustainability, and social justice. His games turn abstract challenges into intuitive, interactive experiences that spark insight and inspire change. With a background in psychology and storytelling, and decades exploring how stories and play can drive social impact, he creates tools that make systemic problems feel personal and actionable. His work has been used at universities including HU, UU, and Radboud to foster fresh thinking through games like It’s All About the MONEY and Imagine the Future.
